A beginner’s guide to GOT.

#GOT #gameofthrones Winter is coming

Whether you have watched Game of Thrones or not, you have probably heard this famous tagline while you sifted through social media or the internet. The world , I beleive is divided into two categories. Those who watch GOT and those who don’t. For the people who watch GOT its one of the most epic television series of all time. And for those who have read the books, they know how intricately complex George RR Martin has created the world of GOT. For those of my friends who do not watch it, most of them have complained thats its either too violent or theres just too many characters and plot lines to follow. There is a little bit of a back story that you need to know about the world of GOT and its central characters which would help you understand the show better. For those who want to watch the show, but don’t want to read the books, here’s a simple guide to the world of GOT. What you should know before you start watching it.

The whole point of GOT , as the name suggests is about who will get to sit on the throne-The Iron Throne.

The breath of the greatest dragon forged the Iron Throne…the swords of the vanquished, a thousand of them, melted together like so many candles…-Viserys Targaryen.

As the quote by the character Viserys indicates, the Iron Throne was forged from many swords by the flames of a dragon and it is the throne where the first King of the Andals and the first men sat on.

The GOT world has basically two continents. Westeros in the west and Essos in the East. The Iron Throne is in Westeros in a place called “King’s Landing”.

If you pore in through the succession of kings in King’s landing, there are a lot. But to understand basically, the whole world of GOT has many Houses. Each house is comprised by the members of the family in that house. Each house has a Lord and a Lady (if he is married) to manage the affairs of the House. Many great houses like The Starks of Winterfell, Targaryens, Tully’s etc (you can slowly learn that up). When Aegon Targaryen conquered Westeros he became the first king of the Seven Kingdoms and the Targaryens became the ruling family at the throne, while the other powerful houses were named Wardens of the North, South, East and West. As the story moves on, Aerys Targaryen II becomes the king of the seven kingdoms. His children were Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys Targaryen and Viserys Targaryen.

Aerys II was called the Mad King and that too for a reason. Due to some unknown reasons, the mad king started burning people alive and was planning to blow up the whole of King’s Landing using wildfire (an explosive) .

But before he could do that, Jamie Lannister, the lord Commander of the kingsguard stabs the mad king and kills him earning the name “Kingslayer”.

Jamie has a twin sister Cersei and a younger dwarf brother,Tyrion.

Meanwhile Rhaeghar Targaryen had kidnapped Lyanna Stark of house Winterfell (who are wardens of the north) and supposedly raped and killed her. Lyanna was promised for marriage to Robert Baratheon. Also Ned Stark’s brother and fatherwere also burnt alive. Furious at the murder of his betrothed, Robert along with Ned Stark go to battle and kill Rhaeghar and every single Targeryen alive, even babies.

The only ones who managed to escape were Daenerys and Viserys who were only children. They reach the other continent of Essos where they live ,with Viserys dreaming of building an army and coming back to conquer Westeros and be the king as he rightfully should be.

After the battle, Robert Baratheon becomes king of the Seven kingdoms and marries Cersei Lannister. They have three children Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen.

The Starks of Winterfell remain wardens of the north with Ned Stark as the Lord of Winterfell and Catelyn Tully his Lady. Their children are Robb, Sansa, Bran, Arya and Rickon. Ned also has a bastard son (whose mother is unknown) called Jon Snow. Being a bastard, he does not get to keep the name “Stark” and is instead called “Snow”. Ned also has a ward, Theon Greyjoy. He was captured and kept as Ned’s ward because his father, Balon Greyjoy rebelled to become the king. The Stark words are “Winter is coming”. In the world of GOT, winters and summers last many years. According to the Starks, when the long winter comes, The Others (zombies) will attack. Although the Starks still say the words, The Others (or Whitewalkers) are considered to be a myth. Speaking of that,

To the extreme north there is 700 ft tall wall of ice called “The wall”. The wall separates the north and the seven kingdoms. Beyond the wall there are people called the wildlings and other mythical creatures such as the children of the tree, whitewalkers , a place called the fist of the first men etc. Although the mythical creatures are beleived to be just stories, the wildlings are there and pose a constant threat to the seven kingdoms. To the protect the wall, there is a group called the Night’s watch. The Night’s watch has been there way before even the seven kingdons were there. The members of the nights watch are not allowed to marry or father children. They patrol the wall and constantly have ranging trips beyond the wall to assess any probems the wildlings cause. They too beleive the whitewalkers are mythical. Since the service in the night’s watch is for a lifetime, the men are usually criminals who were sentenced to life imprisonment or death.

As the series runs its course, many characters will die. Many new characrers will come. But as they are all fighting for who gets to sit on the Iron Throne, what noone realises is that the real danger that they should be preparing for is the attack of the Whitewalkers which will happen when the long winter comes in a few years time.

Now that you have understood all this (hopefully) , you can watch GOT. Just a word of advice. Try not to have any favorite characters because you don’t when they will get killed. But don’t worry. The show is great. Theres a reason GOT is epic. You will know when you watch it.
