Again, another post with a super long title. The last post where I did a review on the South Korean television series, “Oh my Venus” , I talked about the importance of not judging people based on their looks and how appearances can be deceptive. You could say this post is actually an extension of the same theme. There are so many books, movies and music about loving and accepting ourselves and to not judge based on outward appearances. Amongst the long list of movies in that list, there is this movie, called ‘The Beauty Inside ‘
Country of origin: South Korea
Language: Korean
Directed by : Baik (Baek Jong Yul)
Written by: Kim Sun Jung and Noh Kyung Hee
Based on: The Beauty Inside by Drake Doremus
Music: Jo Yeong Wook
Released: 20 August 2015
Duration: 126 minutes
If I haven’t mentioned the names of the actors in this movie, then that is because of how the storyline of this movie is.
The story follows Woo Jin. Everyday he wakes up in a different body. Sometimes he is a man. Sometimes a woman. Sometimes an elderly person, sometimes a child. He has no control over what appearance he will take on next. He works as a furniture designer selling furniture online with the help of his friend who knows about his condition.
One day he happens to meet Yi Soo and is immediately drawn to her. Initially he is scared to approach her and waits for a day when he looks young and handsome. Although he tries his best not to sleep so he won’t change, he eventually does change into an elderly man and cannot see her again .
However, she eventually discovers and accepts his condition. And the two start their relationship. But as time passes, we see things don’t seem to be going as expected. Each time he changes, he must find a way for her to accept him and recognise him, which sadly does not seem that easy.
The movie is unique with a concept that is very deep and thoughtful. The beauty inside all of us. This is and very light hearted film with some really nice cinematography which I personally liked. The fact that 123 actors played the male role was very interesting. Despite playing opposite to so many male leads, Han Hyo Joo managed to deliver a consistent performance with the actors. I also liked the profession that the protagonist followed and his emotions towards the same. We think along his lines and come to a point where we accept how hard it is for him.
The film is not complex in any way. And more so than the concept that it shows, the filmmakers have emphasised the relationship between the male and female leads more. It was nice to see how they adjusted every day just because they love each other for who they are. After all, in the end most of the things that we do is oit of love and for love right?
Like I said in my last post, despite knowing how much we should value a person for his character than looks, the reverse actually happens. It can’t be helped that much actually. Things have just gotten that way.
If you think about it, external appearances are not as unique as character. They say there are 6 people that look like us on Earth. But when we think about character, each person’s is unique. The way we react to things, the things we love and do, everything.
Being so different, brings about a lot of conflicts as well. If a person were not to do things that feels right to another, then to that other person he or she is wrong. I mean think about it. How many times have we argued for differences in opinion? Some people stick on hard to their decisions. But if everyone surrounding them feel it’s wrong, they are alienated. Even if they are right in the end. This goes upto a point where people act and decide things just to please others. This on turn could lead to unhappiness , dissastification, etc.
I guess I have gone a little off topic but then again, it is true isn’t it?
In short, the message that I have with this post is, respect others for who they are. Whether they are right or wrong. Respect their character and their individuality. It is when we do that, will we be respected for the same. You don’t just get that respect and love , you earn it.
And like those old sayings go, don’t judge a book by its cover. You never know. There are so many instances where that has been proved. J K Rowling had been to countless number of publishers most of whom rejected her work for so many reasons. But eventually, she proved them wrong didn’t she?
If you do like these kind of concepts, do watch the movie you will like it. The music in the movies especially tracks like the main theme, True Romance by Citizen ,Alapoma are really good!
Thank you for reading this. And always remember to love yourself. Love and respect others. You only get one chance.

This is definitely a very unique concept…and wow 123 actors? Never heard of a movie that featured that.
You are so right about respect. There are way too many people that don’t respect anything, and only seem to care about their own. But luckily not everyone is like that. As always I enjoyed reading your post 😀 Great review! 😀

Yes 123 actors ranging from senior citizens, children, foreigners , and actors , both male and female from the South Korean film industry.
We definitely need to give and take the respect for sure.
And thank you!

Are you excited for the drama version in the works?

I am! I want to know how they will extend it to like 16 hours or so in a drama. The movie is quite simple , the storyline I mean. So let’s wait and see!

Thanks for sharing this. It does sound like a great film concept, sort of pushing the boundaries of love and beauty. It may be a little different than the natural process of growing old with the same partner and learning to love those changes; grey hair, saggy bum, spots 🙂 This week my husband and I watched Down to Earth with Chris Rock which had a similar concept. You might enjoy it. Thanks again for sharing this.

Yes. The aging process and things were one of the reasons that was an actual strain in the relationship. It’s a stiry of how they got beyond the point where appearances matter. And I will watch the film you mentioned as well! Thank you for reading!

I need a place where i can keep track of movies and non anime series i want to watch. I have Goodreads for books. Mal for anime. Where do i write theses down so i don’t forget about them and then never watch them?
Your review really has me interested in this film, I just don’t have the time to watch an entire feature right now.

I keep track of all the stuff by simply writing it down on the reminders on my phone.
It’s an interesting concept. A TV series of the same is releasing this yeat but since you can’t seem to find time it’s best to watch the movie. 🙂

Watching a little anime is going to be tough enough, so a full tv show isn’t going to happen no. I only seem to have snippets of free time at the moment. Still, If I really like the movie, then i can always write the series down for later. I’ll have to watch oh my Venus first though because you made me want to watch that one too.

I am glad I made you want to watch all that! And I hope you get the time to see this movie too. It’s one of those movies that make the South Korean Film industry stand out.

Is it just me or does this movie sound exactly like the new upcoming American movie called “Every Day”? 😛

I did hear that a Korean television series and an English film will release based on this movie. Not sure what the title to the English movie is, but it must be the remake if it is that similar.

If you just search and watch the trailer you’ll see what I mean 🙂

Yeaj I saw the trailer. Apparently it’s based on a book or something. It’s like a teenage American remake of ‘The Beauty ainside’ . I had enjoyed the Korean movie A LOT. But that had more mature characters. I’d like to see how it goes in an American teenager perspective.

Yeah me too! It’s funny how the concepts can be so alike (presuming that they didn’t steal each others ideas)

It is. The concept is very interesting. And how they went around it too. And the cinematography I’d nice. It looks very good on the eyes as well. This movie is being made into a Korean TV series as well. And an English movie will release soon with the same concept as this although they haven’t said that the English movie is based on this Korean movie.

Oh I think I will. I often find it refreshing to read and watch stories from other cultures. There are often subtle differences in storytelling conventions that really enrich the experience for me.

That’s the same reason that I ventured into films and TV programs ranging from different languages. Out of all this the Korean entertainment industry really stands out. So much amazing content! You can see it all across my blog! We get to see themes that are otherwise rarely depicted on korean movies and TV shows.
