Lie by Jimin is the second short film and the one that comes right after Jungkook’s Begin. To watch the video click here

The video starts in a blank background with a voice over by Namjoon that says-

My parents’ house made up one realm. This realm was familiar to me in almost every way–mother and father, love and strictness, model behavior, and school.

This quote is from the same chapter of Demian from which Jungkook’s quote was from, with some words omitted. With this quote we understand that high expectations within a strict household and a model school would often cause Jimin to have problems when he didn’t meet those expectations. The way Jimin handled himself when he failed expectations, forms the crux of the story.

It starts with a picture of a forest, which is later revealed to be a painting that is hanging on the wall in Jimin’s room. There is a video recorded recording his responses and a mannequin arm holding something that is facing him. All this seems to indicate some sort of mental health facility. The painting in itself seems to be suspended in thin air and the fact that there is a mannequin arm and not a real person emphasizes the theme of ‘Lie’.

The hand shows him a picture. The setup looks similar to the ink-blot test that is frequently used for psychology tests. The image that is shown on the card is actually a symbol representing Jungkook’s video, Begin. All his reactions are being recorded by the video recorder.

In the next ink blot, Jimin’s symbol is shown to him. This symbol represents a bitten apple. The apple is an important part of Jimin’s theme and it could also be indicative of the story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden and the theme of temptation. As Jimin sees each ink blot, he smiles arrogantly and shows different kind of emotions which are all recorded. This indicates that he is definitely in a mental health facility, and he is being analysed. In between the analysis we a black and white image of him dancing in front of a hospital bed with him singing ‘Caught in a lie’, which are  part of the lyrics of Lie. He sings about wanting to escape from something, he says it’s endless even if he runs, and that he has fallen in a lie.

Jimin suddenly falls backward and we see him in a hospital bed with another empty bed next to him. The mannequin hand shows him another symbol, which makes him look at the bed next to him. Suddenly a martini glass filled with capsules are shown and Jimin is shown stretching his hand out towards the next bed. It shows that Jimin is missing the person that was with him, and from the pills in the martini glass, it most likely must be Hoseok, who had overdosed on pills in I Need U.

This signboard is suddenly shown which says ‘Flowering plants Arboretum , 2.1 km’. This could be in reference to the picture of the forest that we saw in the beginning of Lie. As the story continues, this place is very important as you will see soon.

Suddenly, the chorus of the song starts with Jimin singing ‘Caught in a lie’ and Jimin is shown to be dancing, fully with emotion alone, while he seems to be having a pillow fight alone. Something that we saw in the Run video with Hoseok. This seems to confirm again, that Hoseok was the person with him in the mental health facility.

In the next scene, we see the image of the burning piano which we saw in First Love. Jimin seems to be drowning and an apple that represents Jimin, drops into the water. The fire and the water are shown together and we can hear the sounds of the fire and the water. Jimin is also shown to be dancing in front of a tiled bath tub, overflowing with water, the same bath tub we saw in Yoongi’s First Love. This confirms that Yoongi and Jimin are also connected.

Suddenly Jimin falls backward onto the bathtub and wakes up as he rises from his bed. The curtains around him rise up slowly, leaving him on the bed, alone in the darkness. He is left alone with himself.

We also see an image of Jimin, with the picture of the forest and his symbol of a bitten apple behind him. At his feet is water. The colors in the picture seem reversed, as if to represent he is in a ‘Lie’. The next scene shown Jimin twitching violently back and forth, which symbolizes the battle between his true self and his lie.

This message flashes on the screen, which translates to-

Show me the way, stop me, let me breathe.

This is actually lyrics from the song ‘Run‘ where they express how lost and confused they are.

Jimin then solemnly takes a bite out of an apple, and stares solemnly into the camera. He is no longer smiling arrogantly like before but is more solemn, like he has accepted himself,

Another quote appears on screen, which translates to-

Inside me, I’m trapped and dead.

This is the lyrics from their song called ‘Save Me‘.

Finally Jimin turns the camera to face the painting and stares at it.

MAMA by Hoseok

MAMA is the sixth film in the Wings short film series by Hoseok. In this song he talks about his mother who supported his dream of dancing when others wouldn’t. She would work extra hard just so that he could do what he loves and therefore he produced this song and dedicated it to his mother.

The short film starts with a voice over by Namjoon that says-

With a face that resembled her son’s, timeless, ageless, and full of inner strength, the beautiful woman smiled with dignity. Her gaze was fulfillment, her greeting a homecoming. Silently I stretched my hands out to her.

This is actually a quoted portion from Demian from the chapter Eva, which is the motherly character in the story. With this short film we see Hoseok’s strong connection to his mother.

The movie starts with Hoseok lying down in a padded room. A person opens a hatch in the room and observes him lying on the floor. That person seems to be a doctor as he is then seen to be writing inside the medical records. It’s written that he is anxious and irritable, illogical and retarded, aware of time, place and identity within normal limits. His medical history includes stroke, head trauma, epilepsy, smoking, alcohol, diabetes, and hypertension. He’s been diagnosed with Munchausen syndrome. Their plan moving forward is to implement a placebo. According to Wikipedia, this syndrome is a “psychiatric factitious disorder wherein those affected feign disease, illness, or psychological trauma to draw attention, sympathy, or reassurance to themselves. Munchausen syndrome fits within the subclass of factitious disorder with predominantly physical signs and symptoms, but patients also have a history of recurrent hospitalization, traveling, and dramatic, extremely improbable tales of their past experiences.”

So the pill overdose and everything that happened to him seemingly seems to indicate  that he was craving for attention. In this case, most probably from a motherly figure.

He suddenly wakes up and at the correct time, two doors open releasing hundred of thousands of capsules. He takes one and swallows it and we see a pill fall into the martini glass (the same one we saw in Lie). The pill as the doctor has prescribed is his placebo. It doesn’t have any actual effect. It will just make him think like there is.

Suddenly we see the effects. His eye is focused upon and we see the image of a garage door with some scribbles and a slight drawing of Abraxas on it. As to where this garage door is from, we will see in the next post. He goes all tipsy, tearing apart the padding, and running around. In certain scenes we can even see a pair of wings highlighted behind him, like that of Jungkook in the end of Begin. He finally passes out on the floor.

The next day, light is shining through the hole of the padded cell and it’s open. He looks through the hole and sees Jimin’s painting. This confirms that Jimin and Hoseok were together in the mental health facility. He goes outside and looks at the painting.

This sentence comes on screen which translates to-

Because the sky is blue, because the sun is shining.

This is actually lyrics from I Need U.

Hoseok takes out a Snicker’s bar and takes a huge bite out of it. He then smiles at the painting and then walks away. When he walks away we see that the image he saw was not the forest seen in Jimin’s Lie, but rather a picture of a mother and a child, with EVA written in the corner. The Eva as mentioned before, denotes the motherly figure from Demian by Hermann Hesse.

What we understood so far

WE understand that Jimin and Hoseok are definitely connected. We understand that Jimin has a serious mental condition wherein he finds it hard to accept himself and love himself. Hoseok is seen to be having a very strong emotional connection with his mother and was also with Jimin in the same mental facility.
