Festa #3.21 – Paper to Reel – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

And here we are at the final post on this Special Series/Festa! We are concluding this series on the book vs movie of the final installment of the Harry Potter series!

Of course this isn’t the only post, you can find lots more on the main post on the Harry Potter Universe! Now let’s get into it!

The Basic Plot

The plot starts at Privet Drive after Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts , only this time he isn’t returning to Hogwarts but is getting ready to leave on a mission to end Voldemort once and for all with his best friends, Ron and Hermione.

Armed with the knowledge about the Horcruxes, Harry and his friends set out to find them and destroy them. But after starting the journey, they realise how little they know to actually do it. Combined with new found knowledge of Dumbledore’s past – the journey isn’t easy. The book them goes through Harry’s journey and the end to his connection with Voldemort.

The Differences

The Life and Lies of Albus Dumbledore

An element that’s ever present in the books is the doubts that arise and grow in Harry’s mind about Dumbledore – and how that affects his resolution to solve the mission as a whole. This is mainly fuelled by a biography by Rita Skeeter called “The Life and Lies or Albus Dumbledore”. In the films, although Rita is shown in the fourth film her presence was lesser throughout the films and maybe due to that – the book was never depicted as much on detail in the movie. Even though certain scenes and tidbits of information such as about Grindelwald are mentioned in the film, it’s not nearly a big deal as it was in the books.

The Durlseys

Harry’s relationship with the Dursleys isn’t that great, but their split up at the start of the Deathly Hallows is a pivotal scene. The movie played out a little differently like they were going different ways rather than acknowledging the danger Voldemort was to them as well.

Regulas Black

Sirius’s brother who planted a huge bomb on us at the end of the Half-Blood Prince wasn’t given much details like in the books.

Hermione and Ron

The fact that a ghoul was going to pretend to be Ron or that Hermione had sent her parents away, along with other details was missing in the movie.

The Tonks Family

Along with a long list of characters that are missing, the Tonks Family and Lupins connection to them and his contact with our trio are all absent in the films.

Which one is better?

Compared to the other book versus movie posts of Harry Potter you may have noticed that this is way shorter. This book, although long was adapted into TWO feature films that gave it a lot more room for doing justice to the book. However, by the time we reach this finale the missing feeling from earlier books set on in this final chapter. The book was a thrilling read and literally gives goosebumps when all the pieces fall together like a wondrous jigsaw puzzle. The movie was exciting – an adaptation of the great battle was really good like I mentioned in the movie review – but at the end of the day, for me, it’s all the little details that mattered and just for that – the books the winner here! I was always a true Potterhead in terms of the books, so overall, the books are naturally the winner for me! What about you? Let me know in the comments!
