Watch With Me : The Untamed (2019) – Ep 43 – recap

Now awake at Gusu, the home of the Lan clan, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji share their theory on how The Red Blade master went mad – Meng Yao had modified the music that Lan Xi Chen had taught to him which affected his mind. Lan Xi Chen still wants to feel the beat about his sworn brother Meng Yao but knows that Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian won’t lie about this either.

When Lan Wangji leaves for some urgent matters, Wei Wuxian asks Lan Xi Chen about the scars on Lan Wangji’s back. He learns that Lan Wangji was heavily punished for defending Wei Wuxian shortly after his demise and was even punished to a three year solitary confinement as well. Wei Wuxian is heartbroken but Lan Xi Chen continues by mentioning their childhood as well. I knew the scars were because of Wei Wuxian all along but somehow hearing this pains me more!

Wei Wuxian soon finds out that Lan Wangji’s father had brought his mother to Gusu and made her stay in a rather secluded quarters much to her and the clans opposition. Their children were then raised by the Lan clan disciplines and visited their mother sometimes. Eventually their mother passed away and Lan Wangji would spend a long time just waiting outside for his mom. He also realizes that the place Lan Wangji brought Wei Wuxian to heal is the same home in the story. This kind of explains that remote nature of Lan Wangji and how once he is attached to a person it’s for life.

That night, the two spend some time talking to each other as they have some alcohol and Lan Wangji mentions that he now has suspicions for Meng Yao in the death of Jin Zi Xuan. The person who played the flute and affected Wen Ning must have been him all along, especially now that we know he manipulated music to affect the Red Blade master as well!

The next day Meng Yao visits Gusu and asks about Wei Wuxian to Lan Xi Chen and he hides the fact that the duo are there. After Meng Yao leaves, Lan Xi Chen asks the duo to go to Yiling. The episode stops when the duo steps into a home to rest in between the journey.

Takeaways from the episode

Aahhh… This episode was a pain fest. Who knew the perfect and pristine Lan Wangji had such a sad past. But like I mentioned in the comments that actually makes perfect sense on why his demeanor is like this too!

And we knew this was coming too – but the scars. The fact that he endured so much for Wei Wuxian, it makes the scene in the previous episode where they escaped the Jin clans home together make it even more profound. Some actions are subtle, but their impact is huge. That’s why this duo happens to be my favorite duo as of now! Now onto the next episode!
